Hughes/Horseshoe Lake News By Holly Bacon firstname.lastname@example.org Master Gardeners
May has been a busy month for Crittenden County Master Gardeners (CCMG). The Master Gardener annual conference was from April 29-May 1 in Hope. Those attending from Crittenden County were: Holly Bacon, Marlene Christianson, Adair Dhority, Dan Mitchell and Pam Myrick. While there, Holly Bacon received her Five- year pin and those receiving their Ten- year pins were Marlene Christianson and Adair Dhority.
Those not present at the Conference, their pins will be sent to the County Agent and given out at a monthly meeting. While at the Conference Master Gardeners were able to listen to speakers, Brent Pemberton on “In Search of New Plants”, Lelia Kelly on “Vegetables, More than Tomatoes and Peppers”, Aaron Harding on “Keyhole Gardening” and Paige Mizell on Camellias for Arkansas”. Janet Carson was there, even though she has retired and did her Plant Trivia game. There was a Gardeners Market, Silent Auction and Pop-Up-Art, games and activities. On the final night after dinner the keynote speaker was Rick Schoellhorn who spoke on “Proven Winner Plants” and gave his recommendations for this area. The Pre-Conference Tour was a Homesteading Workshop at Old Washington State Park. The optional Post Conference Tour had one of four choices: Visit the University of Arkansas Experiment Station and had a Propagation Workshop, The Grandview Prairie Tour located in Columbus, or “Gardening on the Edge” in Miller County for Landscape Tour of the Texarkana area gardens and Howard County Farmers Market/Local Foods Tour. In all there were over 450 master gardeners statewide who attended.
Despite the weather the CCMG had another successful annual Plant Sale this year on Mother’s Day weekend. The CCMG wish to express their thanks to all those that came out and supported the Plant Sale.
Without you, the CCMG would not be able to give out the scholarships they have. Since the beginning of giving out scholarships, starting in 2006 through 2018, there has been $35,150 awarded to Crittenden County residents.
Year-Round Bunco was hosted by Pat Walters at the home of Donna Culver. Pat served Taco Salad, Cheese and Hot Dip, Chips, Guacamole provided by Stephanie Shelby and the desserts were: Blackberry Cobbler and brownies with chocolate icing. Low score was won by Pat Walters, High score went to Trisha Clark, most big buncos was taken by Robin Scott and Travelers was won by Jayla White.
The Horseshoe Lake Ladies Bunco hostess this month was Lethia Jo Cupples. Most Big Buncos was won by Jayla White, High score – Tasha White, Low score- Pat Walters and Travelers was won by Leann Cupples-Rash.
The ladies enjoyed Salad, Lasagna, Chicken Alfredo, bread sticks and Cherry Pecan Dump Cake. This group will take a break for the summer and resume in September.
